Here we go again, my 6 month old clf (Sky) is having a hard time with yet another concept. She is a retrieving fanatic. She absolutely loves to retrieve! And she brings it back to hand everytime I throw it.
Recently, however, when I have someone else throw the marks for me (like a hunt test scenario) she wants to bring the bumper back to the helper. I figure that it is from her getting use to me throwing for her everytime. But I really need to correct this. She is almost done with collar conditioning, but every time I say "here" for her to bring it to me and not my helper, she looks confused. How can I fix this?
have your dog on a lead. when she returns to the thrower say "no" "Here" and jerk. as soon as she turns give her a "goood" "here" Pretty simple. Start short enough so she can be on lead. and make the thrower throw the bumper to where the bumper is closer to you than the thrower. make sure the thrower isn't swinging the bumpers prematurely before the throw or causing distractions. they should be still as possible except for the throw itself.
This isn't much of a problem and should extinguish it'self fairly quickly. Just have your bird boy ignore the pup and you call him into you and be going out to meet him at the same time. Not mad, you're happy he got the mark, let him know it when he gets back to you or you to him . You might have to walk all the way out to the bird boy a time or two but the pup will get the idea. Teach him what you want. I've had several pups who wanted to visit the bird boy. All wound up going out and coming back after some training.
Keep the marks on the shortish side until he's returning.
Do what Howard said and have the bird boy throw the mark far away from them.
Do a long flat throw or a slight inthow so the pup doesn't have to go past the bird boy. You want the bumper to actually land closer to you then to the bird boy so that you are the more attractive person to come to.
And that you are on the whistle/ recalling the pup a second or two BEFORE the pup picks the bumper up so that pup has it in his mind to return to you.
I don't know how strict you are on mixing work with pleasure but the bird boy should not be petting/ talking to or paying any attention to your pup before running. They should not have other bumpers in their hand or at their feet.
Some times you can attract pup by calling and swinging a bumper or running away.
You say that pup is almost CC. Be really careful, as in don't do it, with giving a young dog a collar correction around the gunner. That can and does create all kinds of other problems for you that are easily prevented.
This to shall pass.
