BidenFor everyone who claims the Obama administration wants a $1 trillion tax hike, Joe Biden has a message: Yes, we do.
The vice president was referring Thursday to the Democrats' pledge to let the Bush-era tax rates for households making $250,000 and up expire at the end of the year, while maintaining current rates for other Americans. Republicans have called for maintaining the current rates for all Americans.

That is correct, Helen. I live in PA, so Biden is familiar to folks in our state as well.
Beats me how he can get elected so often! However, DE is a small state, which means they don't have many members in the House. Once Biden began to move up the Congressional ladder of committees, I'm sure DE didn't want to lose those seniority positions.
I think we see that he has that personal charm on the stump, but so does Obama. Voters, it seems, can mistake that kind of charm for competency.
I would agree that Ryan will use the same approach on Biden as Romney did on Obama. He will politely, but firmly, correct Biden's inaccurate statements. He will be professional and business-like ... much like he has been in Congress. Stump speeches are different than these debates. I would expect him to maybe use Biden's "Yes, we do want to raise taxes a trillion dollars," ... but I wouldn't expect Ryan to refer to Biden's "chains" speech.
I'm getting the impression that as Romney gets more comfortable in his role as a nominee, looking forward to being President, he is developing the kind of public persona that is more akin to the Reagan image. JFK grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth, yet no one ever accused him of being "out of touch" with voters. IF (notice IF) the silver spoon is any argument of substance, that argument can also be turned around into a desire to "serve" the country. Most of those who run for POTUS are by no means "middle class" by the time they are seeking this office.
I read one piece that mentioned that Romney could have made more money by NOT leaving Bain for the Olympics or governorship of MA. I feel pretty sure that Obama, Biden, Reid and Pelosi have benefited greatly in building their personal wealth due to their govt connection (the insider trading allowed to Congress Critters, as one example) ... wealth that they may not have acquired in some other careers. If a campaign wanted to, I believe something could be made of that. Of course, same is true of R legislators ... but they are not front-and-center in the limelight as these others.

I hope Ryan keeps his points and his replies SIMPLE so those watching don't get turned off.
An old journalism truism is that newspapers are written for those with a 6th grade education. I don't want Ryan to get into the weeds and lose the audience.
I doubt Biden is even practicing he thinks he has so much experience bring it on. He's am old man his time has come and gone as he will find out on Thursday. He wont know what hit him Ryan is one up just stepping on the stage he has a budget another thing the dems have failed at.

I can understand the O/B campaign underestimating Romney in the first debate. Romney was over-shadowed in the primary by the "headliners", and even the R's didn't seem real excited about him.
If they made the same mistake again, with the VP debate, it would be inexcusable. Just plain dumb.
Helen, I think Romney was able to stay out of the weeds in his first debate. I'd think Ryan is smart enough to do the same. Biden doesn't seem to be the type of debate opponent who would draw Ryan down that path; nor would Biden want to have to go down that path himself, I don't believe. B would be even more confused than the audience
BTW, the next POTUS debate is town hall style. Obama is supposed to shine in that environment, but Romney is good in that environment as well. If there are no teleprompters allowed, and the crowd is a reasonable bi-partisan split, it could be a hard row to hoe for Obama.
I envision Obama resorting to rhetorical platitudes, and few real facts, in that environment, presuming that his "charm" will work the magic. In '08 McCain suffered in his physical presence (I remember someone on this forum referring to McCain's puppet-like movements, not realizing that McCain was encumbered by residual effects from his Viet Name torture). Romney has a much more commanding physical presence than McCain did. McCain also looked "old" in the debates. Easy for Obama to look more vigorous. No advantage there with Romney. One might say that McCain looked "senatorial", and Romney looks more "presidential".
Whether we like it or not, the physical presence plays a role in how the words spoken are received by an audience.
Possibly a fortunate twist of fate that Romney did NOT get the nomination in '08 ... he would have had to run against Bush's record. I really believe that nobody could have beaten Obama in '08, so better it was McCain who lost in '08 than Romney. Romney does not have to carry the baggage of being a "loser" in '08. This would clearly be a Reagan/Carter replay were it not for the racial element. I don't believe Carter ever had a "fanatic" following ... he was not that kind of personality. So many people wanted Obama to succeed big-time ... except for maybe Hillary and Willie... that it is hard to admit he just wasn't up to doing so. They'd still like to believe that he was the victim of circumstances, rather than the victim of his flawed ideology.

I agree with you about how important the physical presence is. Did you notice that Obama came out to the podium swaggering? I also noticed that Romney is about the same height as Obama and looked darn trim and fit. Romney does look presidential. He was also animated and strong. He did not let Obama get away with innuendo or false statements. He came right back at him making his points.
I don't know how they line up the questioners and their questions in the town hall format. I hope it is fair. No soft balls for Obama. I hope the questioners put him on the hot seat and ask good questions about what has happened (or not happened) in the 4 years he has been president -- especially since the Democrats were in control of congress the first two years.
Helen
The moderator for the VP debate is foreign affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz this should be interesting. I watched Obama on the view, and the univision interview where he was more relaxed didnt seem to help him without his teleprompter he stutters and says um alot. He didnt practice because he thought it was going to be easy he didnt know Romney was as smart as he was after the first question Obama looked stunned.
On talk radio they had a fellow call in who was an expert in reading lips he said as Obama shook Romneys hand he said "you won this one" dont know if its true but he and michelle didnt look happy when they left the stage

Obama had lost his swagger by the time he left the stage ... seemed like he and Michelle wanted to get out of there as soon as possible!
People faulted Lehrer for his questions, but I think he said they were submitted to him, and he chose from the ones submitted.
Don't remember how the questions are chosen for the town hall format, but if there are no hard ball questions, it will be very suspicious.
