I asked my breeder for advice. She said she likes to keep the pup moving forward, distracted from the lead, and/or use short pops of the lead when the pup tries to mouth it to keep it out of the pups mouth. Does anyone have other advice? Thanks.

How old is the puppy? This is pretty common. Just be persisent and it will go away.

I've never had a puppy of any breed that didn't carry it's lead as a baby. It usually goes away with age. If you really want to stop the behavior before the pup out grows it, offer the puppy a paint roller or a soft toy to carry while training leash walking.
