Aversion to Facebook GDG

Don't quite understand Social Media. I guess I just don't "get it". What is the appeal?

Having said that, I didn't "get" texting either. Slow learner. Swore up and down I would never lower myself. Fast forward two years-- Wow, what an easy, fast way to communicate! I text almost as much as my high school students do.


So, my good friends (clearly not young folks) are telling me Facebook is another great way to communicate. I see it as a way to blow your own horn. Help me out here. Am I off base, out of touch, old, stubborn, all of the above? Am I missing something?

What is the PRIMARY reason to use Facebook?

The primary reason I use facebook is to keep in touch with those friends and family that I don't live close enough to see often. Just this weekend I was able to see pictures of my niece and her friends in their homecoming dresses. This summer I got to see pictures of my nephews baseball games, and family events we missed. I have been able to reconnect with old friends from high school, keep in touch with people I've met in the dog games etc....

Yes, there is a lot of chaff there too. People post a lot of political crap, inspirational quotes, silly sayings etc... but it's worth it to me for the good stuff I posted about above.

I agree with Rick. It's a great and inexpensive way to keep in touch with friends and family that live far away.

John I joined Facebook to keep in touch with family and put pics on there for them to enjoy and see what I was up to in the dog world. Seems to me however they want you to be friends with every other person your family is friends with. In the HRC world, they want you to be friends with everybody there. That was not my intent when I joined Facebook. And I keep it that way and limit it to family and just a few others. I think you can restrict but I am not sure how to do this. I detest it when Facebook sends you through your Email, you have notifications pending. It should be a worry to all of us because I think they can read into our lives more than we care to know about.

I think its stupid. Its all stuff like Im at the grocery store... I didnt sleep good... about to go out and eat... I hate mondays...Made cookies today.... God night all...Etc.

I don't get social media and texting either. If I want to update friends and family, I can call them, or send photos in an email. I have a website for my kennel business, and use that to update puppy buyers on the puppy progress.

I don't text--don't even know how. I am not tied to my cell phone. In fact, I don't even know the number. I keep it in my purse for emergencies.
