I am not a vet, and I am very sorry what happened to your dog. You should at least check with the Specialist and see, sometimes things are not as bad (costly) as you think. Check into the "Care Credit" on high dollar charges you can sometimes get deffered interest. Maybe you have something you can sell. I will say a prayer for your "Spook" and for you...there will be tough decisions ahead.
    Blessings,

From your sig line: Money can buy you a fine dog, but only kindness can make him wag his tail.

Find a way to make him wag his tail again. Care credit, borrow some money from friends, get a credit card and charge it...
There has got to be a way...

Try Labrador Lifeline. They often can help owners w/ this sort of expense.

I've looked into many things none of which will do me any good. Thank you for all the support and advice on places to look. I wish I could justify spending the money on Spook but I just can't. I got student loans, truck payment, and credit cards as it is. Wish I would've done things differently now with my money but you live and learn. He's happy and relaxed at home so there's something to look forward to at least. Only time will tell!

Thats exactly what i'm doing. That and praying. I've carried him outside to try and get him to use the bathroom but he hastn' yet. Hopefully he's just sore and there is no blockage. The vet said he didn't see there being any as of right now so we just keep praying and hope for the best!

You know what? We can all castigate this guy for not doing surgery. I'll be the first to admit it is frustrating and upsetting. I've seen plenty, between working for a vet and volunteering at a shelter. People get between rocks and hard places and unfortunately, animals suffer for it. But at 23, I'd bet we all did things we wouldn't do now. I don't like thinking of dogs as disposable or a dog not getting the treatment it needs. I've lost a dog to a vehicle, I would have given ALOT if I'd had the chance to save him instead of finding him dead, no matter what. Three years later, it still eats at me. Hell, I bought a pup from the repeat breeding, thinking it might help. It doesn't. But, at 23? I wouldn't have had the resources either. Does that mean we don't have dogs because we can't afford it? I don't have the answer to that. All we can do is hope this guy does the best he can for this dog, keeps him out of pain and doesn't let him suffer. And learns from it, as we've all learned lessons, the hard ones tend to stick deeper. Maybe he'll build a more secure kennel, take out a vet insurance policy on the next pup, build up a savings account for emergencies, who knows, but reality is, he's doing what he feels he can do. As long as the dog does not suffer, the OP has to live with his choice, not any of us. I fervently hope the dog heals enough to live a decent life and if not, I very much hope the OP does the humane thing.

I have been there- Dog hit by a car. Broken pelvis. Shattered hip socket. Looking at 4-5K in expenses. Only which would yeld a marginal pet at best as told by the vet.

My wife and I had to make the decision. It wasn't easy. But in the end I didn't want Daisy to suffer, not even for one day. She was bred to retrieve and loved her job. Watching her in pain and just laying there made the decision easier.

My only advise for Spook is this. Do what is right for the dog to make it painless. Forget your emotions, your not one in pain.
