FOr that dry coat question: flax seed oil - take capsule - stick a pin it in and squeeze the oil onto food - every other day or so - only took about 2-3 times until my pup's coat was bright and shiny again - his black coat had gone grey and flakey ---- it looked awful and the flax seed oil did wonders!

I mix Purina Pro Plan Lamb & Rice with raw venison. For lactating females, I feed up to 3 cups raw venison daily along with high-quality Lamb & Rice puppy cereal.

Pro Plan "Extra Care" salmon-based. Not for any special needs, but because I believe that fish is a more "evolutionarily correct" diet for both Akitas and Chessies. Found this when I was feeding my Akita canned mackeral, and started feeding the Chessies, too. There were immediate improvements. Since Pro Plan came out with this food last year, I switched (fed PP chicked and rice for 6 years before that) and haven't looked back.

I could be all wet, but since absolutely EVERYBODY asks what I feed Gypsy when they see her, I don't think so. Since I am a Norwegian x Flemish mix, maybe I should be eating fish-and-flaxseed too!

    FYI --

    RE: BARF Diet

My wife works in a vet hospital (as a dog groomer). She says it is not uncommon to see dogs that are fed BARF to come in with bones stuck in their throats.

    One even died last week.

Earthborn Holistic grain free. Right now the coastal fish one but I switch between proteins. My 9 1/2 yr old is like a pup with her energy level. I do add supplements such as welactin, Phyto-flex cosequin (for the older dog). Pet-tabs and Vit C. They're both in great shape! They also get fresh fruits and vegetables and holistic type treats.
