What would you do?

In training your dog puts on a long hunt then pops and looks at you for help. What do you do? I assume you would not handle as not to reinforce the behavior. Would you give them a firm NO and call them in, repeat the mark?

I should have asked the question assuming you are using launchers.

I suppose I would have a backup launcher to help, but if I had a dog with a popping issue, I would find a way to get some help.

if you had a launcher with sound would this be a goos situation to use it? assuming the "long hunt" got the dog out of the AOF.

If you're using launchers use the sound on the receiver (duck call, tone or whatever).

I can think of several different things one might do depending on the dog's skill level and the situation. Let's see.......not very experienced, too much stress, heat cycle, lack of effort, tired, not very driven or confused for starters. What you would do......depends.

The few times this has happened with my dogs, I simply turned my back which meant "Figure it out....because I'm not helping you." and if they didn't there was a correction related to force fetch "tools". This isn't the approach one would use in some of the other possibilities listed above.

Not enough experience? It may be time to depend more on help in the field to establish the correct expectation.

This is the first time the dog has ever popped. In this particular case, dog was returning from a blind and I hand threw a diversion bumper (which the dog has been exposed to several times before). After delivering bird, sent for the diversion bird. Dog put on a short hunt, then popped. Being a fairly inexperienced handler, I sat there for a minute hoping he would get up and get the bird, but was also thinking "what do I do". I finally told him to hunt it up (which he did), but did not think that was the correct thing to do. It also got me thinking how I would handle this situation on a mark from a winger.
