I do enjoy making these for the dogs who have passed. It gives great pleasuse knowing that they are with the owner.
The wood that partucular Urn is made out of is American Black walnut. The Inlaiy of the Inlaid dovetails is a wood know as Obachi ,or Abachi.
They use it in building Saunas. It finishes to splinterless.. Thats why its popular with saunas.. It makes a nice contrast to walnut.
The Inlay dovetails are fun to make, becuase its a 2 step process. You first cut the dovetails large, then Glue in the Inlay wood,, then very carfully re-cut the tails and pin pockets that accept the next piece of parent wood (this case walnut) to create the thin line that enhances the shape of the dovetails. You have to be very carfeul when recutting,, because any mis alingment shows like a sore thumb..

This is my Maddies urn.
Its very special to me. In fact, the two most valuable pieces of stuff I have, is this urn,, and a Sling Shot my dad made as a boy during the depression. He cut the perfectly branched fork out of an old White Oak off the farmstead they lived on.
They were so poor,, they could not afford ammo for guns. he used that sling shot to kill small birds (quail) and Squirrels and rabbits for food..
He also carried that sling shot with him all through Europe during WWII.
