Health Insurance for your Retriever

Has anyone tried insuring you retriever with the insurance plans offered by your vet or AKC? If so do you recommend it or not, and what are you experiences with it?

I have Pet Plan. Never had a claim. Do a search on here and you'll see pages and pages about pet insurance.

I have pet insurance for injuries only. Cuts, ligaments, snakebites, broken bones, swallowing plastic army men etc. It's pretty cheap.

Ted Shih posted a thread on pet insurance a while back on the research he did. It was a good thread. I read it and used his research to buy insurance for my Rowdy.

I've used Petplan for years. It's what I recommend to my puppy buyers as well.

Pet Plan. I picked the Silver option. The cost is $197 per year. There are three options, I chose the middle one. The options center around the deductibles, etc. I forget the details but they have a website which explains the three options and the coverage, etc.

You can go on-line plug in the breed of dog, option, age of dog, etc. and you get find the price.

I have Pet Plan, from Ted Shih's thread. Most others in the training group got it too. Just to cover accidents and surgeries. There are plans with other companies that cover more but of course they are more expensive.

I've never had a claim. You can double check with them but, they told me they would cover cruciate surgery, and the rehab if the rehab was done by a Vet. So $200 a year goes a long way.

They won't cover any "pre-existing problems" but they did say they would cover a second cruciate surgery if one knee had already been done. As I said I've never had a claim though.

I have several dogs insured with Pet Plan.

I prefer the Silver Plan (80% reimbursement) with 100 deductible, and $12k per year coverage, but you can go online and tailor the insurance to fit your needs. Premium will vary on age and breed of dog and your location.

If you register online, you get a discount.
If you have more than 3 dogs, you get a discount.

I have, unfortunately, placed several claims. PP has been very prompt and responsive in addressing them.

If you get a pup, and have your vet inspect cruciates, there is no worry about issues of pre-existing injury if pup should blow a cruciate later.

Finally, if you decide to get PP, use one of us who also use PP as a referral - because PP will issue the referral a $25 gift card

I have had one claim. For Rowdy, either a snake bite (dry) or scorpion. They paid quickly. The claim form is a pain because you have to submit the whole health history. Fortunately, Rowdy was so young that it wasn't much. I believe my deductable is $200.
