Health Insurance for your Retriever

I also have Pet Plan and unfortunately also have an accident prone dog. I have filed several claims to Pet Plan and all have been addressed promptly. I only had to submit the health history once when I initially signed up with Pet Plan. Since then, I just file the claims form. One claim they did not pay and that was for a pretty severe allergy reaction that took several vet visits. Pet Plan deemed that case a pre-existing condition (which was true) and that was based upon the history I provided upon initial subscription with them. So far in 3 years with the outfit, I have actually gotten more in payments than I have paid for my premiums....so I feel I am a winner!

I've used Petplan for years. It's what I recommend to my puppy buyers as well.

Has anyone tried insuring you retriever with the insurance plans offered by your vet or AKC? If so do you recommend it or not, and what are you experiences with it?

I took out PetPlan based on RTF member recommendations, and I have been happy so far with claims paid.

I have basic/catastrophic VPI insurance on my girls. You can justify the annual premium w/just one vet visit/bill per season.
I'd consider changing, but most (if not all) insurance providers don't cover CCL/TPLO for the 1st year, so no way I'm switching providers.
If you're planning on a long time commitment, do your homework, it doesn’t make sense to jump around.

Petplan DOES cover CCL repairs within the first year, provided you get a vet exam per their requirements.

Mostly HT, some Qual. I switched from VPI many years ago, after researching who covers what, premiums, etc.

Interesting. Petplan was one of the cheaper monthly rates I was quoted. I've had 9 dogs on it for at least 3 years, avg $20-25/month per dog, less if they were puppies when first joining. My oldest one was up to around $30/month when she turned 9. But, it does vary by area & breed. I think I live in a cheap area.
