Man I hope this doesn't start a war.

I have avoided FF out of fear mostly. It seems to me that if done wrong you will have a confused lap dog.
That said, sometimes you just gotta do what cha gotta do.

Now to say I'm an old dog need'n to learn a new trick is an understatement.

I think I need a book on FF training. I say book (instead of DVD) cause I might have to read a page 2-3 times to get what the author is try'n to say. If I'm wrong and a DVD exist that might be some kind of miracle then I'd like to hear about it.

Does Rosetta Stone make a retriever language? It might be easier if I just get english and make the dog watch it.

Bottom line is....What's the best FF training book on the market?

This truly is an area where a picture (video) is worth a thousand words.

I FF'd my first dog in the mid 1980's.

It was done by combination of watching a session (live in person) and reading some hand written notes, passed on from one trainer to another.

Folks are going to come by and say: "what program are you using"? "pick a program and stick to it" etc.etc. (all pertinent and good advice)

At the end of the day, weather you use a DVD, or a book. Remember: DON'T let it become personal!!! Keep your ego in check and teach the dog.

RND gave VERY sound advice. I am (just as predicted) going to avise that you follow a program start to finish. Things are done before FF to help the dog understand how to turn off pressure. I really like the Fowl Dawgs series of DVD's especially the FF segment. You get to watch Rick FF a dog from start to finish. This is the real process not an allready trained dog. I recomend the DVD's to all my pup buyers and my clients that have me train their dog so everyone is on the same page. If you get all 4 dvd's it will be the best $80.00 you ever spent. Judging from your post, if I were in your shoes I would do the following: Read about it and then get someone's help with it, someone who has FF'd a few dogs and knows what he is doing. I am assuming that you have not followed a program.

It is a common part of our nature to fear most what we understand least. You're part of a big club. But you live in an age when information is easier than ever to come by.

Both together is better. Each medium has its strengths. Take a good look around the marketplace before deciding. There are precious few programs dedicated to force fetch, let alone with enough detail for the first time trainer. But it's there.

Bottom line is....What's the best FF training book on the market?

I was worried about FF myself and followed smart fetch to the t, never had a problem!

I am following the Smartwork program. I have not started FF yet with my pup but have watched the DVD an read the book. Smartfetch seems to walk you through it well, and be designed for a newbee like myself.
