Vet question, turned up toes???

This is a strange one. My two year old is not lame. This afternoon I noticed that on his back feet, the toes are turned up, like elf shoes kind of. When you look at him straight on you can see the pads facing you and the nails pointing up.I looked at his pads, and other than some minor cracking that may be from all the play in the snow, I could find no injury or cuts. From the side it looks kind of like a foundered horse. I plan to take him to the vet on Monday as I have to work all weekend and he does not seem to be in any distress at all. What in the heck could this be???

I would suggest keeping him confined and getting in to your vet as soon as you can so he can be assessed.

Yeah, I can't get it now either. Google flexor tendon luxation in dogs and see what you come up with. I'm guessing a visit to a surgeon is in your immediate future, unfortunately. Call me tomorrow if you want, I'll be on the road.

not sure what you're describing, but you might be describing a very lazy way to stand that's not at all uncommon. You see it in dogs that have been standing for a while. See it outside the breed ring all the time. If you lift his rear leg by the hock and put it down so that he's standing correctly, does he show signs of pain?

I echo what Barb said. It's just a weakness in the tendons of the foot, not really a medical issue. A vet visit will ease your mind though. Best of luck.

Vet appointment set for Monday AM. I'm keeping him crated until then. I would appreciate any recommendations for ortho vet if needed in the northern New Mex, southern CO area if you have them. Wish us luck.

The good news is that the local vet says the tendons are fine. The other news is that he has no real idea what it is. After crating over the weekend, the foot looked a lot better, so in his credit, there was not so much there for the vet to see. That being said, Im going to try keeping him crated and leash walks only for another week and see if improvement continues. If it does not, and it looks that way again, I will be searching out an ortho vet for sure and go straight there. Thanks for all the good wishes, here and PM's.
