I used to walk a little under a half mile to the bus stop and it was UP HILL BOTH WAYS!!!

it was over a small knoll, I just wanted to sound like a codger!!

LOL. Got you beat. One grade school that I attended had no buses. Everybody walked to school no matter how far it was to their house. I don't remember minding the walk because it was fun most of the time. I can remember making that walk a lot of the time without any human company. I liked it. It was a full two miles on country roads plus most ( or all ) of a mile across our own ( rented ) farm. Sometimes Dad was working "in town" besides the farm and he would take us to school on his way to work. Good times. No traffic at all. Seldom saw a car or even a pick-up. Part of that route ( one mile of it ) is now part of a major highway. Good times gone.

In our part of the country we had little 1 roomers with a lean to for coats & a washstand set in the center of every 4 square miles. Had Grandpa & Grandma's house been on the other side of the road I would have gone to another school. Either way it was 2 miles, not much rain but lots of shine & snow. 20 below was not uncommon, but I got bundled up & off to school which I really liked as there was someone to play with & enjoyed the stimulation of learning. The little 1 roomers are all gone, in fact most of the town schools in our conference have consolidated to 1 team for sports. I really feel sorry for kids who have to do the city schools.

But the rule was, because of the Lindbergh kidnapping, don't accept rides with strangers . That will date me .
