Sea Ducks and Dogs !!!!

Well this past weekend I went on my first Sea Duck hunt off Long Island New York. We had a blast!! But the best part was that I took my 3 year old dog Rocket. For his first "BIG" water hunt he did great.

The first day was very ducky with 3+ foot waves and rain. Rocket made 5 retrieves before we decided that the tide was getting to be too much. Dealing with the salt water, waves ad no land in sight was all new to him... and me. I had to handle on most of the retrieves because of his placement in the boat while we were shooting. Its a little different having to wait for your dog to be on top of the wave before you cast him.

The second day was very foggy with no wind. And I mean no wind or waves. It was too calm, but we did manage to scratch out 7. And again Rocket did great. He was able to mark all of these with no handeling involved.

The guide said things had been pretty slow the last week but they showed up for us this weekend. We saw alot more birds on Saturday with the weather and had alot more shot opportunities but our shooting was not too great.
Either way I am glad we went and I will do it again.... soon.

Good Job. Hunting sea ducks in open water takes a little bit for a dog to get used to. Just make sure the duck is dead and try not to send you dogs on cripples.

Yea we found that out.When they hit the water if the heads are still up shoot and shoot quickly. Those ducks are hard to kill.

I have guided trips for divers 4 out of the next 5 days and they will be bringing young dogs that are new to this type of hunting.
