Can I do anything interesting on this land?
This is a golf course near my house. Question the first I guess is should I even be training on a golf course? I've thrown fun bumpers here when there was snow on the ground. It's still too cold for any golfers to show up, but I don't know if it's kosher for me to be there or who I should ask.
Dog is a small 4 year old Toller, has obedience, a trained retrieve, and is reasonably steady.

You should always ask permission no matter where you go. Don't assume "public" use land is actually open to the public, especially golf courses, as most are actually privately owned. Good rule of thumb is: if you are wanting to use for something other than what the area is intended for, ASK. If you would normally have to pay for entrance, usage, ASK. If it is an area where children routinely play or perform, ASK (and be prepared for a NO, since they are not wanting the kids to have to dodge dog droppings during band, football, or soccer practice/games.).
yeah make sure to ask permission even though I doubt a golf course will allow dog training with the fear (irrational or not) of the dogs tearing up their sod.

It is not allowed on any of our local golf courses (even in the winter).

Definitely ask. I was friends with the Course Pro of the course I used to live on and he said no problem as long as it was very late in the evening or very early in the morning. Basically so I wouldn't interfere with any golfers. If he got a complaint though I was done. No more training on the course. All I did was through bumpers and use the water on the 2 holes closest to me. Never got any complaints so I was fine.

Golf course designers must also be retriever trainers as every golf course I have seen has wonderful water blind ponds all over the place. Unfortunately most won't allow you to train there.
Ask permission.
Don't ever bring a gun.
Go early before any golfers get there.
Use only bumpers - no ducks.
Clean up dog poop.
I trained 2 HRCH dogs using a golf course to introduce almost all new concepts before I went elsewhere to generalize them.
The nice thing about golf courses is if you goof up your training session...you get a mulligan.
