Yes, there will be a blood clinic for Optigen Testing & for the GRF Projects. Here is the info you'll need ...

GRF DNA Collection and Optigen DNA Testing
This year, once again, GRF is generously combining its ongoing DNA blood collection project with the additional service of collecting blood samples for PRA and ICT testing by Optigen LLC.

There is no charge for the blood draws or shipping. GRF also absorbs the OFA CHIC fee for Goldens.

For Optigen testing, all breeds can participate at one of our blood draw sites. GOLDENS ONLY are also allowed to send individual samples directly to Optigen. If you are sending samples direct to Optigen, they should be scheduled to arrive between 10/23 and 11/1/2013.

The Discount Code is GNS13x. The Code will be active from 10/16 thru 11/2/2013.

This should give you plenty of time to order the test either before you leave for the National, or after you return home. There is wireless Internet available at the Ray Clymer Exhibit Hall.. No funds are handled at the blood draw sites. When you place your order online, print out your order form and bring it with you to the National. It goes in the shipment with your blood sample.

This chart explains how the discounts will apply:

Test No Discount Full Price 20% of online order (from Clinic or Discount Days) 20% Combo for more than 1 test on the same sample at same time 5% Online order
    for Combo
    Testing
    Prcd-PRA $195 $156 $124.80 $117
    GR_PRA1 $100 $80 $64 $60
    GR_PRA2 $100 $80 $64 $60
    ICT $120 $96 $96 $90
    Total $515 $412 $348.80 $327

For donating to the GRF projects with OFA and Broad Institute, please go to the GRF website, and print out the forms. Since those forms require extensive information, it would be best to do that now.

Mike Lappin and Kaye Fuller will again be generously donating their time to do the blood draws. The schedule will be as follows:

Wed. Oct. 23 9 AM – 5 PM – Hallway, Ray Clymer Exhibit Hall
Thur. Oct. 24 9 AM – 5 PM – Hallway, Ray Clymer Exhibit Hall
Fri. Oct. 25 9 AM -- 2 PM – Hallway, Ray Clymer Exhibit Hall
Sun. Oct. 27 4:30 – 6:30 PM – just before Field Welcome Dinner, Holman Center

No specific appointment time is needed. HOWEVER, you DO need to get your dog on the “Master List” for the Optigen testing.

Please be sure and get great photos of your Goldens during the field events. Mark Atwater will be taking them and does a fantastic job, particularly with regard to those hard to get action shots. We really, really need your photos if you get a placement or a JAM in any of the field trial stakes as they will be published in the GRNews. Also, we love photos to use as candids.

Mark is going to get there early to take photos of your Goldens---go to the May-June 2013 GRNews and see what a fantastic job he does re photos. I had a very difficult time picking out two photos to feature for each dog as all of them were so good.

Remind everyone around you as well to find Mark or his workers for photos. Field Trialers aren't used to getting their photos taken (except at a National Open and National Amateur) so don't always think about it. We really want to have good photos of your dogs to publish in the January-February issue which is all about the National Specialty.

And---this is a very special reminder---we will be having some of the conformation judges come to watch the field trials. Please, please welcome them and offer to describe anything if needed, visit with them, and just let them know how much we appreciate their coming. We hope to make this an annual tradition. Let them see why the discussion of form following function is so relevant. Remember, they will be our guests. I know Andy and John are going to help with the welcoming committee. Hopefully, all of you will join them in a warm Texas Howdy to the conformation judges.

We are working to include a HT that will run the weekend prior to the main events of the Specialty. All those interested in having the HT are encouraged to PM me along with your offer to volunteer. Very Cool!
    -----
CALLING ALL FIELD VETERANS! Come get some ducks and show off for everyone!

The GRCA National Specialty WC WCX would like to invite our golden field veterans to apply to run as TEST DOGS for the WC WCX land and water series (and as bye dog for the water series, if one is needed). We will utilize TWO test dogs for each of the four stakes (WC Land, WC Water, WCX Land, and WCX Water) and ONE bye dog for the WCX water, so we need NINE dogs total.

Eligible goldens must be (a) over the age of 9 as of the date of the WC WCX, and (b) totally retired from field or hunt test competition as of January 1, 2013 (the dog can still be doing obedience, tracking, rally, conformation, etc.). Since we only can use nine dogs, first come first served if you volunteer your golden! You would need to be at the WC WCX site by 7:30 a.m. on test day (Sunday, October 27) for test dog, and at the site by 2:30 p.m. on test day if you are bye dog. We will also take two alternates in case one of the test dogs or owners that are selected cannot be there for some reason.

These slots are open to any dog with a field title, from FC down to WC, who meets the other requirements above. Don't worry if you think you have too high of a level dog to be a WC test dog. Remember test dogs are used only to look at the parameters of the test, so any level of dog is welcome for this event. However, your dog should generally be able to perform the requirements of the test without assistance (so if your dog is not steady or can't do a triple, please don't volunteer it for a WCX test dog).

Please e mail Terry Thornton if you want to volunteer your oldster to come get some fresh birds and get a big round of applause. Amigoldretrievers@yahoo.com. Please send your dog's full name and title, owner's name, and contact information, especially a contact phone while at the National, and which level test(s) your dog is able to run. Please volunteer no later thanOctober 10, 2013, so we can make sure we have all slots filled.

Hope to see some retired gray faces out there!

Some of you may not know ... Optigen offers a special price on testing the offspring of parents who were both tested "clear" for prcd-PRA by Optigen.

This can REALLY make it worthwhile to get that extra generation of tested-clear, which in turn, will save some future pup owners some $ by not needing to test a 2nd generation, clear by parentage.

While some believe that it is not necessary to continue testing in future generations, the accepted protocol for other breeds (and for OFA registration) is to re-test every other generation.

The good news is that this special deal for prcd will now be given clinic discounts!! and the online order discount as well.

Just got this info from Optigen:
    -------
a change in policy whereby we will allow clinic discounts and a 5% discount for orders placed online. The pricing won't be correctly reflected in the online order but we adjust it when the sample is received.

    -----------

This means that the $95 price, if done with another test can reduce the price of the test to just $57.

At this price it can become very worthwhile to do this test when you are going to do one of the other DNA tests.

This will apply for the GRCA clinic at the Natl Spec this year.

    Default Field Trial Award Dinner

I would like to encourage all of you to attend the Field Trial Award Dinner. We want to honor all FC and AFC Goldens at this event and this is your opportunity to see Up Close & Personal many of the great ones. This is your chance to let those Goldens and their owners know how much we appreciate what they contribute to the breed.

    Glenda
