blacklab12, I understood that you were following Hillman's puppy DVD but it appears that you aren't as you skipped the use of the ecollar, and are now teaching your dog handling skills that aren't in the dvd. This may be why you are confused.

My advice: If you are past the material in Hillman, move on. Buy more advanced training material and follow the directions in it as best you can. If you get stuck, try and find a warm body to help you but if that is not possible ask here. That has worked ok for me. Don't skip steps because each one builds on the previous.
