Hey guys, I woke up this morning with my Boxer (i know not a retriever, but he is birdy as all get out. i give him a spoony every now and then and he is in heaven) not being able to put any weight on his back left leg. Took him to the vet and the vet thinks either a sprain or tear of a cruciate ligament. Got him on high dose anti inflams and rest for 2-3 weeks to reevaluate it. If the worst comes to fruition, and he needs surgery to repair a tear, i would like to go ahead and do my homework on some ortho specialists in the area. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? Thanks so much for your help guys.

I have a 15 month old lab having the exact surgery I Tuesday next week. Dr maxwell at Memphis Veternary specialist is doing it. He is suppose to be really good. Dr Tobias also there is as well. They charge 3000.00-3500.00.

There is a vet in Birmingham al that is suppose to be really good. He is around 2500.00 for same thing. Just not convenient to Memphis when your looking at 3-4 trips getting checkups. But I have talked to a few people that would Definatly drive to Birmingham vs the local vets.

My cousin is in dental school in Memphis and he can give you my call information. I have had4 cruciate surgeries with my labs and there is NO ONE that can compare to Birmingham. It is only 3 1/2 hours from Memphis to the Acton Road Animal Hospital and Dr. Melton and his huge staff and facility. Ask Ian Campbell for my info.

I was told to make sure the surgeon has done at least 50 surgeries. Also if it's a cruciate, there are different techniques used to do the repair depending on the nature of the injury. So it's a bit more complex than just finding a good vet. there is lots of info here and on the web as to the different approaches. hope it's something simple and not a cruciate, good luck!
