No ducks aren't flying overhead. 10 or 20 are in a plastic crate sitting next to you. You will be a hundred yards out in the field from the handler and dog. When they're ready you get 1 duck out of crate, hold gun with one hand. When they signal you give the bird a big toss in the air, let it get air under it's wings, shoot, and sit down. Sometimes two people are out there to throw and shoot. One throws birds the other guy shoots, or thrower will be a backup gun in case 1st gun misses. Pheasant are harder to shoot by yourself as are pigeons.

Just make a new thread on this forum asking about other trainer near your town... I'll bet there are more than you know... Find out which clubs are close by... Maybe contact the club and see if you can work at the trials... They can show you what to do...

Be careful with gun fire around your puppy. The right way to do it is probably not how you think.

I didn't start off right next to her my dad got about 80 yards behind me and I would throw the bumper in front and my dad would shoot and he would gradually decrease distance until he was right next to me

I am from other side of the world! But this advice would be the same. ''Sucking info on here'' may not be the best for you right now!?...But the suggestion by Huntinman' is how 'I' would play it.
    Wish you well

    OK
Wait for a LONG while before shooting over the dog again. I know you're a duck hunter but you need to do other work with the dog first.
For now, give your dad the gun AND the bumpers. Have him out in field in front of you 80, 100, 150 yards. Let dog see him. Have dad shoot first then give bumper a good high and long toss. (angled away from you). Dad stands still and you send dog to retrieve bumper. Only do a few retrieves then quit while dog still wants more.

I hope you continue to post on here. I like reading your stuff. Too bad you are not up here, I would love to shoot with you. Sorry, I'm off topic.

Just go slow with the pup. It is a pup, don't forget that.

I had the exact same problem you are having and I did what Breck advised---no birds, no matter how tempting. Just use bumpers.
