Anti-Dove Hunting Bill Introduced in Iowa

    Posted on March 8, 2013

Just two years after establishing a dove hunting season, Iowa sportsmen
again find themselves facing its threatened closure. Animal rights and
anti-hunting groups, upset over the newly created season, are pushing
Iowa House File 291, sponsored by Representative Mary Mascher (D-Iowa
City). The measure would ban mourning dove hunting in the state by
removing them as a game bird from state law.

“Anti-hunting organizations have not given up their fight to ban dove
hunting,” said Evan Heusinkveld, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance director of
government affairs. “Iowa sportsmen must contact their state
representatives in opposition to this hunting ban.”

In 2011, after more than a decade of work by sportsmen, Iowa became the
41st state to permit dove hunting when the state legislature passed
Senate File 464. Doves are one of the most popular and abundant game
    animals in the country.

Take Action! Iowa sportsmen should contact their state representatives
and ask them to vote no on House File 291. Visit USSA’s Legislative
Action Center to find your state representative’s contact information.

Figure this one out. We have dove hunting in VA...always have. Both the Republicans and Dems are blocking Sunday hunting whether on public or private land. Tree huggers and fundamentalist on the same side. Wrote my State rep, a Republican I voted for, not the first word of reply or explanation. Gov't for the people? I don't think so....

Stupid isn't restricted to parties. (Let's not get this moved to POTUS. I could mention taxes breaks for aristocrats, the sequester, separation of church and state,... Not the place.)

I live in Iowa and provide some habitat for doves on my land. For more years than I remember, I have urged State representatives to let wildlife biologists manage wildlife... (Although the DNR needs some political oversight...)

In Iowa, there was a long-time state legislator, who I guess did good on other things such as habitat, who was dedicated to doves. I don't know Mary Mascher's connection to her.
    BUT
We have problems on the other side of the isle with folks manipulating the DNR, too. When this was passed, the DNR biologists suggested using non-toxic shot and got a political attack from the Republic party.

I guess I'll send my old letter to the Johnson county representatives reminding them that wildlife doesn't live at the shopping mall... and that wildlife biologists are in a better position to decide this than politicians.

Forgot to mention, good luck fighting the Bill. Nothing more fun in September than taking the lab and the 28 gauge with group of friends to hunt doves. Well, maybe when I put them on the grill wrapped in bacon for dinner is just as much fun too...!

Over 50% of the people are opposed to dove hunting so state representatives will not support it, but over 50% are opposed to traffic cameras but yet they will support keeping those.
