Thanks for the advice and encouragement. Read a lot on how difficult it is to train a dog not bred for hunting. Besides Dokkens book, any other suggested programs to follow?

Also, what does everyone use their golden to hunt for? Have seen them used more for waterfowl than upland game.

I think beginning with Bill Hillmans puppy DVD and transitioning into Evan Graham's Smartwork's is a good combo. Well worth the money.

Grouse, pheasant, and woodcock. Quail in the past.

So just about anything. One more question, I'm not able to use live birds to train with and haven't seen anything about using dummies in place of them. Any differences or suggestions on how to train with dummies?

Good luck with your Golden pup, they are wonderful dogs. Mine is a rescue and he has hunted upland and waterfowl. I run hunt tests with him and he does very well. The program that I follow is Total Retriever Training by Mike Lardy. Its a nice step by step program that is easy to follow, adding some help from a local club you can achieve a fine gundog.

I'm also new the the forum and dog training game. I have a 4 and a half month old golden that I'm training now, with the assistance of my friend who has been training dogs for a long time. So far she's doing great! And not from field lines either.
