Thread: pointing labs

  1. #1

    Default pointing labs

Can anybody recommend a good pointing lab
training program? I am sure many aspects of training
would be the same I am just as sure there are some
    differences.

Do a search for this book and see if you can find it cheaper than it is here on Amazon, but I have it and it's a pretty good book. My lab wasn't a pointer, but it was good training nonetheless. Would be a great book if you're going to get a pointing lab... http://www.amazon.com/The-Pointing-L...nting+Labrador

    wckrishet,

I'm not a pointing Lab "trainer", but I would say that if you have to train them to point, they aren't a true pointing Lab. I've had several as an upland hunter, some with pointing Lab ancestry and some from mainstream FT bloodlines. If you are looking for pointing Lab titles you might need some guidance regarding their training, but if you just want a good hunting dog let them discover upland birds and see what happens!

My pup has strong pointing lab and duck hunting background I
Can find a lot of info on duck dogs not so much on pointing labs

My guess is there might be a little more involved teaching him to raise his
Foot and stick out his tail.

    Got to love it.
here are a couple links of some training data. I like the book Training the Pointing Labrador better than the DVD set by Poudre River.

Get the book 'Training the Pointing Labrador' by Julie Knutson at www.gunclub-labs.com. I have trained and run labs in field trials and hunt tests, as well as hunted them on wild birds where they pointed. My first lab achieved two open and two amateur seconds as well as other all-age points and also went 6 for 6 in AKC MH. I recommend the book, not only for pointing lab training, but it has good infromation for any lab trainer. Jackie Mertens says that also on the back cover of the book.

He recently bought a gun and had his background
checked. That and over seventy titles in the line in point
    hunt and trail tests.
