Default Best Puppy Training DVD &/or Book

I keep finding so many opinions I figured the statistics would point me in the right direction. I have viewed another poll on RTF that's more about later training for the new guy and I'm picking up some direction for down the road. However, I've only been thru Water Dog DVD so far and want to get myself started on some specific puppy training before moving on to Mike Lardy's material.

You're on the right track. I'd recommend Lardy's "Total Retriever" system, and go get John and Amy Dahl's book "The Ten Minute Retriever." Good places to start. Also, go find a pro in your area, make friends, and get some help.

I have been using the book mentioned 10 minute retriever and the duck dog basics dvd. $45 for both. There both very helpful in different ways. The book gives you a lot of dos and donts for a pup.

After watching Bill Hillmann's DVD start to finish, I have to say I think it is excellent for a puppy. It actually shows how to mold and shape a puppies behavior. If money is a consideration, I always recommend Jackie Mertons. And yes, I have seen all of the ones you are considering.

Same as above, i couldnt be convinced that there is a better start for a pup than Hillman.

I voted Sound Beginnings- but recently just watched the Hillman Puppy dvd and was totally impressed! I could only vote for one- but either is excellent. I usually reccomended S.B. for my puppy buyers, but now will reccomend either. Two different schools of thought though- both excellent. Am using the BH method for my two pups( 5 and 6 mos) now. Anxious to see the results on these two hooligans

I vote for Hillman. Of all the DVDs that I've watched, I like his style best.

In my never to be humble opinion, it depends on your experience with puppies. If you've never trained a retriever puppy, Jackie Merten's is a great place to start. You'll find all sorts of help for basic obedience and beginning retriever work. If you've already trained a retriever, Bill Hillmann's is the way to go. You'll work on steady, steady and more steady using Hillmann's.
