    Default sebaceous cyst

I read the searched items, but was wondering about any other information.

Dog has had a cyst on tail about 4 inches from base. Had been rather small for several years. It has now grown to about the size of a half dollar. He seems to be chewing it some. I do plan to go to the vet this week.

    Thanks

One of my dogs has had a few "start".

The first one I noticed, I mentioned to the Vet during an annual office visit for shots.
He told me that they can get pretty big, but can be surgically removed.

You can squeeze wax out of them like popping a pimple. After a few times of doing that with my dog, a hard "seed" of wax comes up and blocks the pore. When that "seed" is finally forced out, and all of the wax is able to get out, these sebaceous cysts have all resolved on their own.

I don't know how many there have been. I'd guess about 5.
And none of them ever got bigger than a large mosquito bite.

Just asked my vet about this today. He told me not to pop them as you get some stuff out of them but you force some back down in there. There is a sac that needs to be removed for them to stop coming back. My dog has quite a few on her tail and a few on her body. Her very first one the vet squeezed. A couple weeks later she ended up having to have surgery to remove that one as it had grown to about the size of a 50 cent piece.

From your message, it seems as though you've not seen a vet yet. On that basis, do you know it's a sebaceous cyst? Something very similar is a mast cell tumor. If you squeeze it just a little (not enough to "pop" it) does the cyst flare up bright red? If so, best get to the vet sooner rather than later.

Lucy had a large benign growth (3.5 cm across) right at the base of her tail. When it grew another .5 cm, we had it removed. She's fine but our concern was that there be enough skin to cover the removed abcess. Right there at the tail, the loose skin is in short supply.

Good advice, Eric...that is what crossed my mind as I read this. Hope it is the sebaceous cyst, of course..and glad to have the information on it. It's one that I am not familiar with.

Several years ago when it was small I asked the vet about it and that's what he said it was. Now that it has grown I am going back to see him.
