Gone way too soon. My condolences on your family's loss.

One of our Golden's came down with a "tick"related disease a few weeks following a hunt test, around 5 years ago. Wewere on a cruise and the kennel/ vet we had boarded the dog with was not ableto diagnose the problem. The dog finally got so bad (afteraround $4k in vet bills) that the kennel owner took him to a special emergencyvet clinic. They stabilized him but tests for 'tick' diseases werenegative. We had been in constant contact, but were afraid we would losethe dog.
Upon our return we talked with a local vet we had alwaysused in the past ....but he had retired. After reviewing the data hesaid that tick diseases do not always show up in the tests, but he suggested westart Doxycycline right away. We did and within three days our dog wasback on his feet, eating and drinking. Within two weeks he was back tonormal. This vet suggested we keep up the treatment for at least 6months, which we did as this problem can reoccur if the dog getsstressed.
5 years later (this year) he came down with the sameproblem in January. No chance of a new tick bite that time of year in KC....soback on Doxycycline and he was fine within 3 days. We did a 90 daytreatment and so far he is back to normal. This is nastystuff, but it can be dealt with, but be aware that not all vets can deal withit well! Good Luck!
