Default autoimmune hemolytic anemia - Experience needed

My dog was just diagnosed with autoimmune hemolytic anemia or (AIHA). From the little I have read most of the time this is fatal and is a precursor to something else like cancer. The vet put him on a high does of steroids and some supplements for about a ten day period and then a follow up visit will occur. His red blood cell count was way down but the vet did say that the red blood cells that he he did have looked new. Thoughts or anything else that I can do?

    Thanks

Hit it fast and hard, like your vet is doing. Consider removing the spleen if nothing else works.
It's not typically a precursor to cancer, but it can be fatal.
Sending lots of prayers and good wishes.

make sure they checked that there is not a tick borne disease as the underlying cause, erlichiosis (sp?) especially. Client of mine had a Rotty they all most lost to erlichiosis with all the same symptoms

This link is from someone who lost a dog to this.

Good luck, hope your pup does okay. It never hurts to get a second opinion on something this serious, just to make sure you're covering as much as possible. I'm not slamming your vet, maybe you're already at the best place possible, but, I personally would be considering a specialist/vet school/university for further consult, if you aren't already.

I had one that got it ~12 years ago after getting into rat poison twice (was under the barn where I just moved, I DID NOT put it out). Vet did mega doses of prednisone then weaning off over the course of a year. She had no ill effects from it after coming off the pred.
