the last few training days there have been a few instances where my 15 month old CLM has had an oppurtunity to return to an old fall. i corrected one and was late on correcting before the bird boy helped him out. so i think we are in need of a couple training days that may entice him to return and correct. when i say it to myself it sounds like setting up for failure so if this isnt a common practice being a rookie let me know (nicely)
what are some setups that a young dog may give into? ive racked my brain on how to place gunners and throws or is it more of a factor thing i.e. cover, slopes, etc? i planned on singles as i have 1 bird boy but setting out multiple throwers/stickmen and having him rotate stations? or should i use the electronics and run doubles/triples and leave bird boy in the car so he wont be more likely to stay around a live human?
How often do you repeat marks or blinds? Not questioning anyone's training regimen because it works very well for many. Repeats are not a part of my training regimen because in my mind it tells the dog it is ok to return to an old fall.
A) the dog avoids a factor leading to a poor mark/line
AND
B) i cant encounter that factor anywhere else (levies, multiple water reintries, hay bales, etc)
blinds only repeats are the know 3 legged diversion blinds on a seperate piece of training ground where only those are run.
So you allow a dog to cheat or do you handle on multiples? I like to handle and repeat. But, I'm a repeater and really wouldn't know how to train if I didn't repeat.
no cheat. i'll call him back and re-run closer or handle if need be. right now we arent running cheating multiples unless the only cheaty water is the first bird down last retrieved (only running doubles not trips).
then i would run singles a few times a week that could best replicate those factors before i'd attempt another setup (double) with it.
First let me preface this by saying in the world of all age dogs I have no "pelts" on my wall. I do train very similar to Blake in that repeats are very rare. If I encounter a deviation from the line from any factor, I stop working on that particular setup & try to isolate the factor. Then run 3 peats addressing the issue, handling as needed. If it was an issue that occurred on a multiple then I will add it into a setup on another day. In my mind this is consistent with the Lardy program & makes sense to me.
Many of my training group repeat marks & blinds ad nauseum & it works for their dogs. Simply not how I train.
