That appears to be a break....kinks at birth in my experience, are not that severe. I still wouldn't worry about it. If she had everything else you were looking for, who cares! It's only looks!

I can't understand how anyone missed this - if she was born this way. I have a really great vet (and I've worked for a few vets, so I feel like I know a good one from a mediocre one) and if her tail was like that on day 4, he missed it when he did dew-claws. I feel like I'd been pretty judicious about watching checking on them daily, and I didn't see it until the day that I started this thread.

This leads me to believe that this probably happened in the whelping box in the last few days. It's pretty stiff now, so I would imagine that it's at least somewhat healed.

I'm glad this isn't a big deal to most of you. I'm curious to see how her tail develops as she grows. I'll be sure to update the pictures in the future. Have had several people contact me about wanting her - If only I could get the same attention for the other pups!

    Still think it's a break????
Depends on the circulation and nerve endings left whether this will bother the puppy as she matures. Potential client for this pup should be advised that if they notice excessive chewing and mutilation or undue attention to the tail, it may require vet intervention. Before breeders were obtaining ACVO eye clearances reducing the incidence of skeletel dysplasia, we saw some weird issues in litters with deformed limbs and tails. This would be hard to miss during dew claw removal, so most likely Mom stepped on her.

Well, it looks as if Crook is going to be making her home in the great state of Georgia. Had a ton of interest in this dog. Sheesh, I wish all of them had wound up with crooks in their tails!

So as an update - here she is. Headed to her new home in Georgia on Saturday. We're going to miss her. Several people came to pick their pups and asked if they could take her!

As a wise old pointer man told me, "if your are looking at the dogs tail, your looking at the wrong end of the dog!".

With a face like that, who could look at her tail!

She's adorable! 2 years ago, I had one pup in a litter of 10 that had a white foot. Not just a toe, but his whole paw was white, up to the joint. Even though Chesapeake owners tend to be a little more accepting of white than those that have Labs or Goldens, the breed standard states that white anywhere other than on the chest or toes is a disqualifying fault. So I was prepared to discount that pup but, he was so cute and eye catching, everyone loved him and he sold for the same price as the others and even runs HTs now. Some people really like having an "unusual" pup!
