    Default New Kennel Building

We are moving to a new home on 40 acres and need to build a new kennel building and want to do it right. We made a few mistakes on our last kennel. One of the big mistakes we made with our present kennel building is just not enough natural light. Electricity bills are high because we have lights on most of the time. If you have any ideas to share, I would like your input on what to do and what not to do. Things that you are very happy doing, things you wish you had done, or things you have seen in other kennels. Also can't remember recommended slope to the drains.

How many runs would you like? Any plans on whelping if so how many moms at a time? An indoor forcing room that is ac and heat for summer and winter. A bathroom with washer dryer deep sink and shower with center drain. Spray foam insulation to reduce electricity bills. Double pane windows for insulation but light. Central air and heat for and radiant heat in floors. Concrete heavy broom finish in walking areas very light broom finish in runs.

We designed ours with these roll up doors for LOTS of light air-flow etc... Also HIGH ceiling to keep it cool.

Great kennel. We are northern Minnesota, 80 miles from the Canadian border. Winters can dip down to -50 below. Looking at ideas for dog septic also. The kennel will have 20 runs. Whelping will be in a separate area off the main house.

I'd shoot for a greater slope than 1/4". In my experience you end up with less actual slope. But maybe I've just had bad concrete guys too. I'd tell them 1/2".

If they cant get 1/4 " per foot ,they arent "concrete guys" thats plenty of fall for liquid or solid to go down hill . Thats an inch in 4' so a 8' long run would have 2" of slope. Standard minimum slope for any residential /commercial walking surface is 1/4" per 4 '. for water to shed.

Hi Steve, If you want more sunlight maybe you could move to Miami! It'd save on heat too! Just kidding. BTW Rooster's puppies are doing great. I really like them! Jeff

Other things to take into consideration is direction of sun. Which way will the building face, which side will have outdoor runs, any natural shade/trees or is it all open area, any air flow issues....
