Default FT Judging Question: I have a vocal dog

Amateur All-Age. Water quad. My dog loves water marks! So much so he "yips" three times out of four marks when I send him.

Three out of four? Will you ding him? How severely?

how loud are the yips? And how big? I probably wouldn't unless it was LOUD and LONG. But it's an issue that should probably be taken care of before gets worse. I try to focus more on what is happening in the field..... But something's make you look at other stuff,

When you send him only? It that is the case, probably not if he is a pin point marker without other issues.

I try to judge the work out in the field, but if your work is the same as the dog that is quiet, rest assured you'll end up behind them when it's time for placements.

A little squeak when sent would not bother me as much as whining as the marks are being shot down.

If it's just a chirp on the peel out, not much of a ding. More, louder, longer the ding gets bigger and bigger until at some point it's a deal ender. Or in this case a trial ender for that dog.

You really gotta be careful about how high a pedestal you put your method, your accomplishments, your dog on. There's usually someone who's done more, somewhere. And they may have used a different method than you did! Chris Atkinson 2013

If it draws my attention I might make a note but probably not much of an issue. Loud whining or barking as the marks go down, more of a problem than just a chirp on the send. I've seen a dog bark all the way to a long bird in the 4th on water & win (I was throwing the long retired), with a past national judge in the chair - the dog won. So the answer is, it's in the eyes (& ears) of the judge.......

Not to thread jack but what If the whining starts once the dog hits the water? I.E. the dog is whining and blowing bubbles after it hits the water for about 15-20 yards. No noise on the line and none as the marks go down just a little as it swims for the first mark and then nothing after that for all other marks???

My answer stays the same... I'm OK unless it starts to yodel loudly... that's just anxiety in the dog trying to get the bird sooner rather than later. I might make a note of it on my paper.
