Default Laparoscopic Hysterectomy in a female dog

Has anyone had their dog go through with this type of surgery? or do you know someone else? Just trying to gather pros and cons if any? I used to work in the OR and have seen it done on female patients and it is very successful and nicer than abdominal surgery. Reason is my friend's dog with the Lymphoma may have to have the surgery. They gave the dog a shot to abort the pups but two remained in her. If the pups are not gone this week they may do this scope to remove reproductive organs etc. They will do a 3D ultrasound on her tomorrow. Mandy (that is her name) is still in remission, no pain and runs to great you. Doing remarkably well!

Actual surgical time and cost are about the same, but recovery is much easier. As chemotherapy causes immunosuppression, any surgery is tough to recover from. So the less impact on the body, the better.

The vets in my area including at the University of Illinois vet school indicate that the healing time is about the same. The total incision amounts to the same length as a regular spay, it's just in 3 spots to get the ports in. If the ovaries are enlarged, which is the case with many older dogs, they can't get them out laparoscopically from what I am told. When I did this analysis to get my 10 1/2 spayed I wound up doing it as a regular spay. They indicated that the healing time was similar.

That would be my concern also. If there are puppies still in there, they may not be able to remove the uterus through the laparoscopic ports anyway, and wind up converting to an open laparotomy.

They have decided that a normal hysterectomy is best. There are 3 pups in there. The cost difference doing it at the University of Guelph and local vet is about $800!!! She will resume chemo in two weeks.
