Thread: How much time

    Default How much time

When training for multiple marks how much time do you guys let the dog focus on a mark before you swing gun and throw next mark. I would think more time between birds would cut down on head swinging

I make them look a long time, and if they start to swing off on their own, I bring them back to the mark I want them to look at. If they insist on swinging, i will just send them at times. They need to learn that the choice to look at the next gun is mine.

    Yes.

There is a two step drill that requires two BBs designed for this, it goes something like this . Step oneHave BB#1 stationed ar 12 OC throw a mark with BB#2 standing motionless at either 9 or 3 OC . When the dog swings off BB#1 correct with a "sit stick sit" correction and continue to wait, when(if) the dog swings off again repeat the correction. Continue to wait till you feel that the dog has satisifed your time requirements, then send the dog.

After a few sessions, (read when the dog is rock steady),Throw the 12 OC Mark, then inconspicuously signal the BB#2 to give you a little motion , when the dog swings off of the 12 OC mark correct with the "sit stick sit" correction then send for the Mark . Repeat till you get no head swinging........then add a second round of motion from BB#2 using the same correction procedure as necessary .
