Default Just starting 2 year old golden male

I've just acquired a 2 yr old male golden to train. He has a strong retrieving desire but has never been formally worked with. No ob, ff, etc. He grabs the bumper but wants to run off and play with it, sometimes he comes back within ten feet or so and sometimes close enough for me to get the bumper. Just like a puppy would. Should I treat this dog just like a puppy and put him on the check cord until he gets socialized to me and the place doing fun drills keeping him within a reasonable distance and then begin ob? Or should I take a slightly different approach?

I suggest treating the dog like a pup. Let him get adjusted to you and the environment. Keep things happy. Use your check chord while doing happy marks. After a few days, start your formal yard work. Golden's are interesting if you haven't trained one before. If you see him begin to shut down, go to a happy mark and break it up, but use your check chord. In time, could be one session, could be ten sessions, he could become wise. Read him accordingly. For now it should be about him, not far down the road, it needs to be about what you want out of him or her.

*Don't drop the check chord while doing your happy stuff, begin to introduce the mechanics of the retrieve without being overbearing.
