Hi,
I am getting ready to purchase a collar for my dog and am leaning toward the TT line. Just wondering if I need a mile or is the 1/2 mile sufficient. I plan to hunt waterfowl and upland and try the Hunt Tests but not likely the FT series other than some local club training. Are those who use TT getting a true 1/2 mile out of the "sport" models?
Thanks for all your thoughts in advance.
just remember that in cold the range isn't has far a 1/2 mile collar may be down to less than a couple of hundred yards cold has a big effect on batteries - I guide pheasant hunters with Labradors and have done so for 16 years and I can attest to the fact that cold performance is not the same as warm performance
Are you sure it is not the different position that you hold the transmitter? Or perhaps the effect that another object may have on the radio waves from the transmitter? Serious question.
I have seen folks "point" the antenna of their transmitter toward the dog. Even when an antenna has an omnidirectional radiation pattern, there are nulls in the pattern. Imagine taking a donut and putting it on your antenna, that's what the pattern most likely looks like. You can really handicap the performance of an antenna by not orienting it correctly.
Cold does affect battery life. In the interior of Alaska it can freeze a car battery solid and bust the case. Buy the best e-collar you can afford as long as it's a Tri Tronics Pro series. Just my opinion. Don
A mile means on the Bonneville Salt Flats without a blade of grass in the way. I always figure half o f whatever the advertised range is. And it's always better to have more than enough as opposed to not quite enough.
Like others have said range with vary. If you are hunting in thick brush or in Valleys and Draws your range will be effected. In training you maybe fine out to 400 yards or so, but things happen when you are hunting and conditions vary. You will be glad that you have the extra mileage (so-to-speak) when and if you or your dog are in a bind in the field.
I would say TT are very close to advertised on a level area. The Sportdog I had was not. I would get the best collar with the farthest range I could afford. I would rather have more then less. Kinda like A 3.5 inch gun, may never shoota a 3.5 shell, but nice to know you can.
Ok, thanks to everyone for your input. I'll spend the extra money to get at least a field series but likely the pro series.
