Default Truck Bed Organizer / Drawer

Just thought I would post a little winter project that I worked on... I’ve had a number of people asking about it so thought I would post a few details...

I’m certainly no professional welder but I was determined to build this out of metal so I learned quickly with my small Lincoln wire feed. I created my design on paper and placed my order with a local metal supplier who also did all the metal cutting for a very reasonable price. The frame is built from 3/4 inch square metal tubing. The box fits between the wheel wells and I built the top deck with “wings” to fold down once it slides in the box. Nothing more annoying than things falling into the sides. I’ve built it to fit into a 2016 F150 with the short box.

My two wingers slide into the slots and my zinger winger holding blind slides into the third slot. I used what we call in Canada “puck board” which allows things things to slide very easily. Same stuff used on hockey boards. The drawer is also built to slide on the puck board which makes it very simple... no dealing with drawer rollers and rails. I used lots of small rivets to anchor the puck board to the metal frame. The top wood deck is simply bolted to the metal frame.

I drilled holes in the bottom of my kennel and anchored it with bolts into the top deck so it’s solid.

The only thing I would do differently is perhaps built it out of aluminum as it’s quite heavy although that is much above my rookie welding skills. Anyways, maybe you have other ideas... would love to hear them and see pictures.

Nice!! I made mine of 5/8" plywood. I have two pull out drawers, one on each side of my 2 wingers that slide underneath in the middle on the floor. One drawer is for small hiking/hunting boots (2) along with rain gear, 2 lighter jackets and a larger heavier gortex jacket. The other drawer is for my training stuff, whistles, collars, winger electronics, white shirts for my stickmen, etc. I can pull my 2 drawers completely out allowing me to remove the entire unit for other truck box usage if need be.

On one side, I lay 24 smaller bumpers on the truck box floor up against the this unit right up front, as well as my chair. On the other side I have my gillie suit in a duluth pack bag, along with 2 pair of rain boots and my running mat.

    Thanks for sharing.

I just finished this as well. Made out of 3/4” plywood, painted, sealed, and covered in rubber. Instead of separate drawers, I made one big slide and can put 5 x 17-gallon bins. Used 1” x 1” steel tubing sandwiched between skate board bearings to make the slide.

I had to remove the factor pop-up handle from the tailgate so the slide would pull out. I decided to dress up the tailgate with 1/2” birch.

These are all very like the Truck Vault product. The TV product is very well built but very pricey and while they claim it is custom fit, it's not really.
