Thread: Garmin TT 550 collar issue

Default Garmin TT 550 collar issue

Had a strange happening. Noticed one of my dogs (that is softer) really vocalized on a blind when I nicked him on a 1 setting for whistle refusal. Didn't think much then noticed my other dog that is HIGH energy and not soft completely bugged out when she got a correction at a level of 1 for refusing to enter cover---so much so that it created an area that was hot that she would not enter--not like her at all. Each has their own collar. I've tested the collar in palm of my hand before on a 1, 2, and a 3. The 1 was barely noticed, 2 was a buzz and 3 I really felt. Today I put each dogs collar against my leg on top of my shorts and a 1 was VERY sharp and I wouldn't even try a 2 or 3. Also tried on the V setting in my hand and I swear it vibrated AND nicked me enough to cause the collar to fly out of my hand. These collars have been used for two weeks (3-4 days/week) since they were charged last.
Anyone with similar issues? Anyway to test other than on myself -- did have another person in training group test the collars on a 1 setting and she was shocked (pun intended) at the level of output. Collar clinic was only other suggestion i got.
    Thanks,
    Tom

When set on one my 550 is nearly imperceptible to me. I would contact Garmin or send it to collar clinic if it were mine.
If you are offended by what is said, ask yourself, is it because it was true?

I had a similar issue with my older Tri-Tronics. It happened only once when it was super cold and the collar had been charging overnight. Ever since then I test the collar on my hand before putting it on the dog. Never happened again so I didn't send the collar anywhere.

Mine is not hot enough for one of my dogs, would you like to trade or sell it?

Give Bruce Conkey a call at Conkey Hound Supply
He will know, he's a Garmin expert!
You can also go to the UKC coon Hound forum. There is tons of Garmin information there. Defently call Bruce before calling the Collar Clinic though

My son just had the exact issue with his. Did you get any answer yet?

Garmin/Tritronics collars have had issues since they sold. We had a nice trial dog almost ruined by the collar hitting him all the way on a long water bird. It went in the trash and a Dogtra was ordered the next day. That dog is worth a lot more than a $399 collar.

When my current dog was young I bought a Garmin 550 from Collar clinic. My wife and I tested it on ourselves frequently to verify what intensity the pup was getting. It seemed to vary a lot on the same setting, so I was able to do a switch with Collar Clinic for a Dogtra and it has been consistent. My dog is about 4 1/2 now. Another couple of postings at that time seemed to indicate that others were noticing the same problem I had. Don't know if mine was a fluke or not but I switched.

If Garmin is paying attention to this site.....the 550 is a paper weight.....I know many people with 550's and everybody regrets buying them......I've been trying to keep my Pro 500 's going....please Garmin.....try again cause the 550 SUCKS!!
