I own both. I prefer the Dogtra for one big reason: I am forever bumping the little toggle switches on the Garmin, and it bugs me to have to constantly check them.

No magnets on my Dogtra Edge RT. Uses buttons to turn collar and transmitter on

The Dogtra Edge RT definitely does turn on via magnets, no question. Nice part about that is no push buttons to wear out or fail.

Jeff, Id look at your collar a little closer , I have 3 dogtras and 3 different models and one consistent in all of them is the magnet on the collar.

Maybe your is a really old proto type ?

On the site you will see a recent post by me regarding Garmin 550. The transmitter failed in a mode that delivered a VERY high level shock when on a '1' setting. Thought first dog was just spooked when she left the field and ran and jumped in the 4-wheeler so stopped and ran second dog and he vocalized and shut down--very weird. Tested collars in my hand and on a 1 or even on vibrate it was strong enough 'nick' to knock the collars out of my hand and was painful. Garmin customer service seemed very aware of the issue but was only willing to sell me a 'reconditioned' controller if I shipped the old one to them at my expense. Decided instead to get a Dogtra Edge RT and really like the strap on the collars much better. The battery life seems a little shorter than the Garmin but I'm not willing to risk my dogs again. Ran them for a couple days with no collars and then with collars turned off to ease back into training. Just my experience but I think there are others that have had the 550 fail in the same fashion.

I have both and I prefer the Garmin . The Dogtra doesn't work well in the water and apparently if you want contact points that work in water they are 39.99 more !They come with the Garmin.

Ive seen several people say the same thing, I have never had any trouble in the water I have an edge rt and 2 collars and train 4 dogs daily. I used to have the TT pro 200 but sold it and went to dogtra when garmin took over.

All new Dogtra e-collars come with the enhanced contact points as a standard feature. When Dogtra came out with the ehanced contact points a few years back, they included them, for free in a baggie.
