    Default Pet Insurance

I am writing to encourage all of you out there to get Pet Insurance, if you don't already have it.

I had a Labrador Male Freeridin Respect the Streak (Weikel), a litter mate to NFC Dottie, FC/AFC Holland, and AFC Tubby. Weikel was a wonderful dog, who never competed but was a fabulous companion to me, my wife, and our horde of cats. He tolerated, but did not enjoy the many puppies I raised at home. I miss him a ton.

This is not meant to be an eulogy to Weikel, but an encouragement to get pet insurance.

At any rate, Weikel developed problems with his rear legs. X rays revealed an enlarged spleen, and some spots on the lungs. After a couple weeks wait to see if the spots enlarged, they took out his spleen. The spleen was sent to the lab, and revealed stromal sarcoma. We went to the oncologist, they suggested chemo. We started treatment. Weikel did not tolerate the chemo and was hospitalized for several days before I made the decision to put him to sleep. Total bills - over $10,000

During the same period of time, I became concerned that Freeridin Super Bowl Kitty (Kat) had developed a grass awn infection. Multiple vet visits. Multiple ER visits. X rays, Ultrasound, etc.
    Total bills - over $3000

Good news - Pet Plan reimbursed promptly, although I am still waiting for some reimbursements.

Bad news - received notice that FC/AFC Freeridin Miss Kitty annual premium would jump from $1500/year to $3100/year. Explanation? Labrador Retrievers as a breed were more expensive to insure, so rates were going up. That led me to look at new insurers

The best option I have found so far is PetsBest. But, they have a six month waiting period on cruciates. So, I am probably going to double insure my dogs for six months.

Just wanted to encourage everyone to get Pet Insurance.

That is alarming. I am picking up a pup Tuesday and was all set to go with Pet Plan because of previous discussion here. Also I have asked for a copy of the policy before enrollment, no one at PP has responded. Is there a minimum age when coverage can begin? And yes, this is a Lab.

I switched from Petplan last year to Figo on my 4 yo because I was afraid he would be denied coverage, one reason being he was away at a trainer when he was young so I don't have documented yearly vet visits with denatal exams. I had read complaints on Petplan doing that. Figo had me obtain an exam when applying including wording on his ccls being normal. He is renewing in a week and at 5 years is at $388 with a high deductible. I have not had a claim so I can't attest to that but they were very responsive answering questions when I applied. As with all pet insurance you can get a quote and compare and read the fine print. Figo does not do wellness plans.

Pet Plan has no waiting period for puppies on cruciates, so long as you get a vet exam and have them put in Pet Plan's magic language.
“your pet has been examined and there is no evidence of cruciate or patella disease”.

I have had zero issues with Pet Plan until this rate increase. And perhaps the rate increase will not affect my other dogs. But I was told that the rate increase was for the entire breed.

I am moving everyone except Kitty to Pet's Best (she has disc issues that were covered by Pet Plan and would not be covered elsewhere). I moved all my other dogs to Pet's Best - but am retaining my existing Pet Plan insurance until the 6 month waiting period is expired. I went to this site

I looked at all 10 and PB was the best for me. But, as Nancy wrote, you need to scour the policy. By the way, FT are not excluded by PB

This is something I need to invest on. Most dog owners I know would really spend just to prolong the life of their dogs and I feel like I would also do the same but still do not have enough budget. Can I pay it annual/ monthly? For sure there are different packages that you can get but feel like I would just get the cheapest one.

Most plans allow you to determine

    1. How you pay - annually, quarterly, monthly
    2. Amount of coverage - $5k, 10k, 15k, unlimited
    3. Amount of deductible
    4. Co-insurance amounts 90/10, 80/20, etc.

    I chose a $300/year deductible, 90/10 co-insurance, Unlimited coverage with PetsBest - $54.07 before AAA, multi-dog discount

I found this site very useful in comparing plans

Be prepared to spend several hours looking at the fine print

    Thanks for this.

Does anyone have any experience with the routine care coverage?

Dumped Pet Plan because of a huge increase (with no claims). Now use Embrace. No claims as yet so no experience there.

I looked hard at Embrace, but they do not cover cruciate injuries - at any point in time
