I am writing to encourage all of you out there to get Pet Insurance, if you don't already have it.
I had a Labrador Male Freeridin Respect the Streak (Weikel), a litter mate to NFC Dottie, FC/AFC Holland, and AFC Tubby. Weikel was a wonderful dog, who never competed but was a fabulous companion to me, my wife, and our horde of cats. He tolerated, but did not enjoy the many puppies I raised at home. I miss him a ton.
This is not meant to be an eulogy to Weikel, but an encouragement to get pet insurance.
At any rate, Weikel developed problems with his rear legs. X rays revealed an enlarged spleen, and some spots on the lungs. After a couple weeks wait to see if the spots enlarged, they took out his spleen. The spleen was sent to the lab, and revealed stromal sarcoma. We went to the oncologist, they suggested chemo. We started treatment. Weikel did not tolerate the chemo and was hospitalized for several days before I made the decision to put him to sleep. Total bills - over $10,000
During the same period of time, I became concerned that Freeridin Super Bowl Kitty (Kat) had developed a grass awn infection. Multiple vet visits. Multiple ER visits. X rays, Ultrasound, etc.
Total bills - over $3000
Good news - Pet Plan reimbursed promptly, although I am still waiting for some reimbursements.
Bad news - received notice that FC/AFC Freeridin Miss Kitty annual premium would jump from $1500/year to $3100/year. Explanation? Labrador Retrievers as a breed were more expensive to insure, so rates were going up. That led me to look at new insurers
The best option I have found so far is PetsBest. But, they have a six month waiting period on cruciates. So, I am probably going to double insure my dogs for six months.
Just wanted to encourage everyone to get Pet Insurance.
