Maybe less than you think. I had a FC that lost sight at age 5. He still won an open and completed his AFC with one eye. His marking ability did change. He did well with shorter more technical tight tests but wasnt as strong as before on the big long retired birds.

I know of a master hunter who lost an eye as a youngster, long before master level. She finished her MH with a good record. I had the good fortune to work as bird boy during a training session one day. Seeing the dog head for the challenging mark I was throwing, I was amazed with her pinpoint marking.

I watched John Blackbird’s dog Moon MH14 (Holland pup) run a Master one time and step on a difficult land mark that most dogs missed. I later found out Moon had one eye.

Good luck. It can be done.

I have HRCH Big Mamou’s One-Eyed Willie MH. He lost his eyesight in the right eye at 8 weeks old. He passed the Spring Grand. It is not his marking that gets him in trouble normally. I think it was easier on him since it happened so early but I have known older dogs that did well as well.

My first HRCH lost an eye at 8 years old. Returned to sucessfully hunting and running HRC Finished. To help him quickly pick up a mark where he couldn't see it, I taught him MARK RIGHT and MARK LEFT. Amazing how quickly he picked that up. He didn't miss much before with two eyes and very lettle with one eye! Good luck, Don.
First you make a Roux; then you go duck hunting.
