It is rare to see a Wood Duck in the open on dry land in relaxed poses. To see a pair, such as this one, in that setting and light is just amazing! -Paul
there's no good reason to fatten up a retriever.
As you know, stealth was an important skill during my earlier career, and I became quite proficient in that regard. The "dry land" you make reference to is not quite as dry as it may appear in these images and was quite saturated with standing surface water scattered about. The birds were not too distant to a small pond which can be seen in the background and I watched as they eventually slinked away into its waters, their distinct call becoming increasingly faint as the distance betwixt us widened. I shot this at about 6:30 last evening with a su low to the horizon and at my back. I could not have asked for better lighting.
My best to yourself and Susan. 👍
