You will have to give a lot more information than this. Is he following a program? If so what program? Where is the pup at in his training? What road bumps have been hit so far? What happened that the desire is gone ( I was reading a post a while back, that an umbrella opened up on a mark and it took some looking back to figure out what happened)?

I'm sure with some more info that someone will jump on and help you out.

He's not using a program, this is his first pup. He really doesn't have the money to send to a trainer, but realizes that he needs help. I don't have the time to help him, I am personally sending my pup to a trainer this summer do to my busy schedule.

It may simply be teething and the dog doesnt want to pick anything up with his sore teeth right now.

If not that, try getting live birds involved.

With virtually no information, I'll make a WAG. I'll bet he has been hand throwing too many bumpers for the dog and he got bored, etc. For a dog his age about 3-4 marks is enough. Always leave them wanting more.

Like the previous posted said, an educated guess will require more information

I would talk him into getting with sometype of program and a club also. he could try going to different areas to train also.
If he has his adult teeth, move on to wing clipped birds.
    How is the dogs OB?

At that age he's likely teething. Of course it's hard to know if the owner has over done retrieving and bored his pup. But he really needs to spend 25 or 30 bucks on a good puppy program to go by, and get this pup ready for Basics ASAP.

Don't need to send to a trainer to be following a program. There are many books and videos available...which of those does he have?

You can teach a dog to quit.....soreness in the dog can also be a big problem.
