How long do you find it takes to adjust to being back home after being gone for 5-6 months? Hard & fast suggestions I plan on asking the pro who has him, but are there some pretty general things that you see with dogs coming home? I've never done this before & I think Kate & I in 13+ years were only apart for a week at a time & that was only on a few occasions.

Don't anyone suggest that he not sleep on the bed because the pillow has already been plumped!

Thanks-

I just had my pup home for "spring break"-he had been gone 11 weeks. He was the same as when he left in the house-stepped right back into the same routine. Ask your trainer what to do exercise-wise, and you should be ok.

Miriam,

When my dogs come home from the pro its almost like they never left. They sleep in the same place, they remember to go to the door when they need to go out and they certainly remember where the food buckets are.

That's been my experience. They just push over the dog that has taken their spot next to the bed and find their old food bowl. Just like they never left. I always hope the act a little like they are glad to see me, though.

He'll act like he did before he left. He may sulk if you don't get out and train as regularly but thats about all I've ever seen.

In Gus's case absolutely no adjustment time....left when he was six months old and came back 2.5 years later....T was a kennel born and lived in a kennel environment until he was three....let me see...he adjusted to home life in about four hours.

5 minutes, except everytime you head out the door they think they are going training.

Ruby was gone for 8 months and came "back" to a completely different house and yard in a different state. It took 2 minutes for her to meet Maggie and Jada, who I didn't have before she left, another couple of minutes to check the place out, and she settled right in.

Whew! Thanks-this is encouraging. Appetite is not going to be an issue. He left as a dog who could care less about food & while there, he's the only dog on the truck that, when dishes are picked up (no matter how long they are left down) hasn't finished his food.

Expect no changes, it will be almost like he never left other then in your case he was little pup and just bigger pup now.

This is the first time my dogs have not gone down south for the winter, but for 4 years they did and each time it was like they never left they went back into their old habits with in 5 to 10 minutes after arriving home.

Such encouraging news. Almost makes you want to keep the dog with the pro for another 5 or 6 months, doesn't it?

Same here. for the first week or two I feel guilty because EVERYTIME I put my coat on they act like we I'm going to go shoot flyers for them. Otherwise, my wife and I have been suprised a how fast the dog's get back into our routine.

What everybody has said. In a day, he will have smelled everything, and pronounced it fine.

Expect to have him try out the fluffed up pillow. I'll bet you let him stay there!

John-

I've lowered my expectations just a tad. At this point, having a door held open for me sets my heart a flutter!

I wouldn't expect the dog to have any problem making the transition back to being at home.

In my experience, the bigger challenge is making the necessary changes in my life to maintain and advance the level of training the dog experienced while gone with the pro.

In my case that included adjusting my work schedule to get time off during the week, a never ending search for new grounds, new water, tremendous amounts of travel, hooking up with training groups, new training equipment, etc.

What are your current goals for Finn?

You hit the nail on the head Jeff!! I think I've planned well -good friends who want to train & have access to great training grounds &a club that offers a lot of training days. I have wingers, etc. so I can train alone just fine. I have no problem hopping in the Jeep before the sun comes up to get Finn where he needs to go & I hope to get some workshops in.

I had to ask myself (& thanks to the friend who posed the question) why I bought him. It's not so someone else could do all the training (although I owe Chylo big time already), but give him a good start & build a relationship with him where in the winter I have someone I like & trust to send him to.

The hardest part for me (as it was w/ Kate) is putting the emphasis on training-not running test after test. I don't have a hard & fast goal as such that if he doesn't achieve a certain title he will be a disappoint to me. That's not what it's about for me. I want to enjoy the dog on a day to day basis-anything he achieves is gravy.
