1st series of Amateur. Dog is released after birds are down. Flyer still alive and walking around, dog runs to bird but refuses to pick bird up. The bird goes one way and the dog goes the other way hunting. Does dog get a re-run?

Does dog get a re-run?
The dog already got a gift why would he get a rerun?

No rerun for failure to retrieve a bird the dog found
Where did this occur?
The dog did get a re-run
Regrettably it’s not the first time and probably will not be the last time. I was RJ behind a dog that got 3rd and got a rerun when the dog would not pickup a drake walking around on bare ground
Speaking of reruns, how about this scenario.

Dog picks up the two outside retired birds perfectly. All that is left is the flyer. Dog goes right into the fall area of the flyer and hunts and hunts and hunts. Finally, the gunners get on the radio and tell the judges the flyer has left the fall area. It is walking towards the left retired bird down by the water.
At this time the gunners start walking down toward the water following after the bird. All the while the dog is now getting closer and closer to finding the walking flyer. The gunners shoulder their guns to shoot the flyer on the ground but before they can shoot the dog grabs the bird right at the waters edge a 100 yards from the original fall area.

Do you as a judge, A) score the dog to the fall area B) drop the dog C) offer a rerun

Am I wrong in my thinking…I don’t believe a re-run would be allowed for this in ANY stake? (I can see some situations where a re-run would be warranted on a flyer if the bird runs somewhere, but if a dog fails to pick a bird up and THEN the bird moves? Doesn’t seem warranted)

Out. Had a pro get very angry at me for this in a Q, I didn't care though.

Gunners inform judges the duck has left the area: Sir please pick up your dog. Go check to make sure the bird actually was leaving the area. If that was true. Give a rerun.

Assuming I could contain my anger, I would probably score the dog to the fall area.
Another possibility would be a rerun, judging only on the flyer.
I would then inform the marshal to express my displeasure with the gunners to the trial committee for shooting a bird on the ground, or at least having intentions of it, when a dog was in the field.

The story sounds familiar, but I don't recall where I heard it.

dog cannot be scored twice on same bird
At the point that it is apparent there is a problem the handler should be instructed to pickup his dog. The dog would receive a rerun having already been judged on two birds but the handler is not free to choose an order of retrieval different from the original run. If the dog chooses a different order that is acceptable.

However, once the dog has picked up the 3rd bird before the judges told the handler to pick up the dog his 1st series is over. Therefore, you either score the dog to the fall area or you drop him.

Ed, is that not correct?

There is no either/or it’s an absolute. The dog failed to retrieve a bird it found, the AOF is irrelevant if the dog refused to pickup a live bird.

However, in this case the dog did indeed retrieve the bird.

Rodger did not indicate that was the case, “dog went one way the bird the other”
Now I see that you inserted a different scenario, a completely different situation, pick up the dog and rerun the dog whose previous initial hunt would already be in the books. I would certainly not drop a dog based on that scenario but I would give a rerun have scored everything except finding and retrieving the flyer.
However, in this case the dog did indeed retrieve the bird.
First scenario, when the dog ignores the bird walking around in the AOF, dog is out, no rerun.

Second scenario, when the bird leaves the AOF and the judges walk after it. Instruct the handler to pick up the dog as soon as the judges informed you or started moving toward the bird.
The dog cannot be expected to mark a bird that's 100 yards away from where it landed. In addition to that the judges interfere with the test as soon as they get up and move.
As Dr. Ed said, the dog reruns the test, same order, two birds have already been judged.
