I am working with our new family pet with some basic OB and would like suggestions for another word for the heel command so I don't have two dogs trying to heel at once when outside on walks etc. My Chesapeake will heel even when I use the other dogs name and I just want to keep it simple and teach a different word to the new dog. The only word I can think of is "side" which would work, but I thought it would be fun to ask.

Thanks,
Flip

This is an easy one, use "sit" that way the right dog heels and the other stays put. Then teach him that "heel" means sit, that way when you want to switch out you won't have any trouble. :)

Teach one to heel on the right and the other on the left. I do it all the time. When I coomand heel each dog goes to the proper place.

I just used what they already knew when I got the second one. I command heel to both dogs and they line up side by side on my left. It has worked for me when needed. I imagine it would look kinda funny at a distance. My third has been taught two-sided heeling and I can't wait to try them all three at once. Two-sided on the right both lefties on the left. :D

When my wife got her dog a couple years ago, she wanted her to "heel" on her right side cause she shoots left-handed. We considered "side" , but chose "leg" for some reason.
When we go to HT now we always get a smile from the judges when my wife brings her dog to the line saying, "leg, leg, good leg."
She'll run from my left, with just a small hand cue on "heel." Maybe one of these days, the twosideness will pay off.

You can always hope, huh.

I have 2 dogs

Both are 2 sided heelers. I say the dogs name and then pat my leg or hold my hand out to the side I want them on.

By themselves. "HEEL" pat my leg and hold my hand out. If they get to far out ahead I stop and hold my hand out to the side.

I keep my thumb touching my leg. So as to not confuse it with Hand signals.

Unless I am seriously misunderstanding you, it sounds like you need to either a) reenforce sit, or b) give your Chessie a command to walk free; like "hie on", "go play" or WHY.

Hopefully, you aren't asking for two command phrases (one for each dog)to heel on the same side? Making a dog a two sided heeler is well worth the small effort required for a youg pup and maybe even worth the extra effort to re-train an older dog. The words you choose have no meaning to the dog until you train them on it, so use anything that will come natural or easy to you for the right sided heel, just be sure it doesn't sound like "sit" or "fetch". My young pup it two sided and I use "this side" for the right (as in...no, no, no! not that side, THIS SIDE!)

The two sidedness is a great tool, I find, when doing "Stand Alone Singles " with both dogs at one time but for OB work I leash up or crate the non working dog...just to help the consentration of the working one.
