We found one of these:

http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/579/_/Scarlet_Tanager.aspx

in the airing yard.

If I didn't know better, i would say it's a juvenile as it appears to be asking for food when we reach our finger to it -- but it does not respond if you put anything else toward it. I suppose it could be defense, but the fact that it reaches out as if looking for food -- as opposed to defensively -- when you put a finger towards it leads me to believe it's a baby.

But would any bird be breeding right now??

it can't fly and we were guessing that maybe it fell out of a nest as it doesn't appear to be injured.

I'm just trying to decide how to feed it. It seems just fine, but I know birds are fragile....

Pretty critter

They are pretty little birds. See them around here on occasion.
Good luck with the new addition.

Could be a Orchard Orieo, they are probably more common in Georgia than a Scarlet Tanger. But I am not an expert. Just seen a lot of Orchard O. Mary Veitch
The pics I've seen are EXACTLY what he looks like. Completely bright red scarlet body with black wings and tail --markings same as in the pic of the bright red bird. I didn't look at measurements, tho. I have him in a small pet crate with some fixins'. I guess we have to go find him some worms and bugs according to what he eats.

He's doing great. I have him in a small carrier with a little lid of water and a lid that has bunny food with seed (will do for now until I can get some bird seed). Also put in two worms... And a small rag... And a twig that goes lengthwise for him to perch on.

He seems "happy"... bounces around, eats seed, takes a drink. So hopefully all we have to do is wait for his wing to feel better.

Of course, my cat is LOVING it... Just sitting outside the crate staring and occasionally pawing the outside. The bird doesn't seem bothered and carries on with his business....

Sure its not a finch or canary? Sounds like its not afraid of you. Might've been domesticated...
My first thought when i saw the bright red plumage was that it was a parakeet or budgie. But he's not... He really doesn't seem afraid?? He's too big to be a finch.

I'll take a pic and show you at some point.

He's a pretty cool guy. And he doesn't seem afraid??? Maybe someone else raised him??? He sat perched on my finger as I walked around the house earlier. Not sure if it was shock or "domesticated"...

who knows... If anyone's interested, I'll update the thread on how he does. Birds don't usually recover from much, but he eats and drinks. Just seems to have a painful wing.

Kristie:

Scarlet tanagers are a pretty common migrant and nester in Georgia. Most folks never see them as they don't come to feeders or sit in conspicuous places. They are a neotropical migrant (winter in tropics) and should be just returning. After long migrations it is not uncommon for birds to get hurt or just be so exhausted that they become almost tame.

Dangit Girl!!!

After I saw that, I swung by \paul's place on a hunch. Sure enough he was sitting there semi-catatonic, one eye blinking slowly and his head was at an odd angle.

Had to cycle power and do a cold reboot, but it looks like we got him running again. Unfortunately, it looks like the Lime_Jello database was open at the time and it was marked as "Suspect". I started the rebuild on it, but due to the size of that particular operation I decided not to stick around. If that doesn't work, we may have to restore from tape and hope for the best.

I checked the error logs, but Doc Watson had an overrun and most of it was lost. Tons of "processing Error" entries and a whole lot of buffer overruns. Must have been a pretty traumatic crash, locked him right up.

At any rate, ya might wanna warn folks before unleashing on like that, I'm not too sure old \paul can take another hit like that.

Always happy to help out in the worst way regards

Bubba
