At present I am on 12 hour shifts, and in the next couple of weeks we have to switch to 10 hour shifts. The schedule they want us to go on is ugly, and I am hoping some one here can come up with one that isn't quite as ugly. We won't be working any Saturday night shifts or Sunday Dayshifts, and the schedule has to accomodate three crews and average out 80 hours every two weeks. (even though this one is 70 and 90 hours)

Work Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday DAYSHIFT
Work Sunday Monday Tuesday NIGHTSHIFT off for 5 days.
Come in Monday Tuesday DAYSHIFT Wednesday Thursday Friday NIGHTS off for 4 days, and start again on Wednesday Dayshift for 7 shifts.

That is ugly. 7 in a row, especially when for the last 17 years we've been working 4 on 4 off 12 hours shifts.

PLEASE HELP.

Hey Debbie-

I've been head bartender at a couple of places here at the beach, so I have a bit of experience making schedules.

First, what is the reason for the change? Are you making the schedule, or is this just what you were told was going to happen?

Off the top of my head, I would say that switching to the ten hour shifts isn't all that bad an idea, it's the five days off then seven on that would bother me (I hope I'm reading that right). Try keeping the same hours, but mix up the on and off days a little bit. Even though you're working the same amount, it will seem a lot better if you did something like two days off; two days on; one day off; two days on; two days off; three days on. That still works out to five days off, seven on.

Speaking from experience, you're absolutely right that seven straight days is rough, especially after five off. I hate going into a long stretch of shifts when I've had a lot of time off. I think it would be better to break up the strings of on and off days.

Again, I'm not sure I'm reading that correctly. If I'm wrong, PM me and I'll try to help you more.

Good Luck!

I am a miner under ground here in Marathon, and they want to make these changes because eventually we will be producing less muck and won't need the 12 hour shifts. I am trying to come up with a different schedule, so that the guys have different options. Others are gonna try, but so far they have had no luck.
Any help you guys can offer will be very much appreciated. I have to work tonight and tomorrow night, so I don't have much time to come up with an alternative. They told us 2 days ago......Nobody is too impressed, as change is not always fun.

take care.
