Jack M. Gwaltney, Jr., M.D. wrote an outstanding retriever training book called "Training and Campaigning Retrievers, The Principles and Practice". The section on "Bird Placement in Trials and Training" is particularly insightful on how to set up advanced training set ups.

What other high quality retriever training books have been published by some of the old "masters"?

There are a number of books that have been mentioned on this site. A search would pull them up. Most people have drifted away from books and have moved to dvds. There are a number of very good ones. I think the best is Total Retriever Training 2d Edition by Mike Lardy. It is accompanied by a booklet. But he has also published three manuals which are a compilation of his Retriever Journal articles. These are quite good and are relatively cheap. They are $25 per volume.

A search will pull up information about all the training dvds that are most often used.
Hope this helps.

James Spencer's Retriever Training Tests is very good. In terms of discussing how the factors affect dogs with the same setups, it's the best I've seen.
