Has anyone compared the effectiveness of Biospot to Frontline Plus? Biospot is less expensive. However, with tick diseases being so devastating I am willing to pay the extra price for Frontline if it provides more protection.

I have used Frontline Plus for years and feel it has provided good protection. I also keep my new pups on Frontline Plus year round until age 4 to prevent bites that might lead to skin allergies.

Ann, the only downside to the Bio-Spot was it lost it's effectivness sooner if the dogs were worked a lot on water. However, I have been disapointed lately in Frontline and asked my vet about other topicals. She recomended a 3 week cycle of whatever product we end up with if we are doing a lot of water work, so I am going to go back to Biospot and see how it goes. It is much more affordable.
Worst tick season I can recall.

I can not give an opinion on Frontline because I have never used it but I have used Bio-Spot for about five years (I think) and I have not found a tick on a dog yet.
It is not uncommon for me to find ticks on myself given the places I train but the dogs have not had any.
I wish we could use it on ourselves because at this rate I am at greater risk than the dogs are.
Bio-Spot has worked better for the dogs than 30% Deet has for me and I just about bath in the stuff.

I am very particular about applying the Bio-Spot on the first of every month and with any product you have to apply on a regular basis.

I found Bio spot to be not effective for my lab when I was living in SE Texas. Quite simply, it washes off in water. With the amount of waterwork plus the amount of rain where I was living at the time Bio spot was effective for no more than one week.

I switched to Frontline Plus, and have since had zero problems.

We tried a few rounds of Bio Spot some time back but were disappointed and assumed nearly daily swims might have been at least part of the problem. Have been pleased with Frontline Plus in the years since.

I wonder, however, if the Bio Spot formulation has been changed since we tried it, as I only recall the active ingredient permethrin but recently saw it also has one of Frontline Plus' active ingredients.

Anyhow, it's that time again here, and after weighing the experiences found in threads like this with our own, I ponied up the extra bucks for the FP that I know does the job under our conditions.

I just switched from Frontline to Advantix. (at the advice of vet). do any of you have experience with it? My dog has really bad reactions to tick bites, nasty sores and even though he is only 22 months old he has a few gray spots where there were tick bites. I am trying to prevent all bites, and so far havent found one that does that.

I just wrapped up an extensive study of both products and have drawn some conclusions. First Frontline leaves a better shine on the shell, Biospot left kinda of white murky sheen. Toenail growth was a bit faster with Biospot, although Sally moved faster and wore them down more. Niether product seemed to leave any noticeable smell and lasted about the same length of time in the water. Frontline did seem to bring on a more aggressive attitude in Bubba, (named after my good buddy Bubba) but he always was a horndog. Unfortunately it did not seem to improve his understanding of which end of the shell to tackle. (thus naming him after my good buddy Bubba)....

Someday I may actually put this crap on my dogs...

the best I can tell you is that I just switched as well, but haven't had a tick in the month it has been used.

I have used K9 Advantix on my BLM for 5 years now. He has never had a flea or tick. The saltmarsh is think with ticks. I get them all the time, my dog dosen't. Advantix is worth the extra $$ in my opinion.

That's odd how one product will work great for one person but not for someone else.
After reading this post earlier today I went out and checked the dogs, still no ticks and we have run in heavy cover and water.
In the past month I have found three ticks on me and still none on the dogs.
Unless I understand wrong water should not be a factor since the Bio-Spot, and I assume the others, is supposed to be absorbed into the body and work from within.
I admit I haven't studied this in great detail I just know I apply it once a month and it has worked great for me.
I do buy in bulk and store in the fridge, if that makes any difference.

Just remember that Advantix is highly toxic to cats. so if you have any kitties, beware.

My vet doesn't recommend Advantix for dogs. He has seen more dogs get rashes at the application areas and feels there is more allergic reaction to Advantix than there is to Frontline.

I guess its always a trade off. I have found several ticks on my dog using the Frontline, and in each case he gets a nasty sore that lasts a long time. So the vet did recommend the Advantix, even though I do have a cat. He just said not to let them be together until well after the advantix dries. If there were an easy answer I guess a lot of the pharmeceutical companies would be out of business
