I bought a started dog. Immediately took him to the vet and gave him the one year heartworm shot. Vet tells me they check the dog when the shot is administered and again 6 months later because heartworms have an incubation period. I took him back for the sixth month checkup (heartworm test), now he is positive. Does anyone have any experience with this? The breeder has yet to supply an evidence the dog had his heartworm prevention during the time he had the dog. Feeling like im getting screwed.

Oh darn - that is crappy news.

I am really surprised your vet did not check for heart worms at the time of the vaccination. I just took my three dogs in for heart worm tests and to get the 6 mo shot. Vet said they have to be tested before the vaccine will be administered which I knew was the case and was fine with. I wanted the test done anyway, for my own sense of security....I changed from nexgaurd to pro heart 6.

I hope the breeder will do what is right.

Maybe the vets here will have an opinion but I was under the impression that if the dog had heart worms when you gave the initial shot you would have had some major problems.???? Yes there is an incubation period and I believe it is 6 months. By your description it sounds like your dog was ok but the initial shot was ineffective and the dog contracted heart worms while in your possession.
