I recently took my 10.5 month lab up to a reservoir to play in the water. A few days before I took him to a different location and played fetch with sticks and he seemed to do fine. But with this most recent outing, I threw out a stick, not very far since he is still relatively new to retrieving from water, and on the way back he started gurgling and choking on the water. He started whining and became a little frantic. He puked when he was maybe five feet from shore and collapsed for a few seconds when he finally made it. Is this something he will learn from and grow out of, or is there something I need to do to help him breathe in the water??

STOP THROWING STICKS FOR YOUR DOG!!!!!
Total choking hazard, mouth impalement Danger. And when you shoot a duck and send the dog he's going to bring back a stick! Just stop doing it. Purchase some training bumpers. Mail order is best but you can find them at your Petco Pet Mart pet clutter type of retailers.

As for the gurgling swim. Swapping out the stick for duck or training bumper. Will help. And he will learn and grow out of it. Mostly.
Some remain waterbarfers. Best not to let those ride in the front seat going home.

Just waiting to see who else takes the bait on this. I mean REALLY. This person went to a different location a few days earlier and threw sticks for the dog, then went to the reservoire and threw a stick in the water... and we get a dog that is seemingly gasping for breath the last 5 feet of it's swim and then collapsed when it got out? If I had a dog, of any breed/color, I tjink I would have been in the water trying to help it.... not standing on the shore hoping the dog would make it....

Who waits til a lab is almost a year old before throwing it a stick? Or other object????

Benefit of the doubt.
We do not know the physical ability of the poster. Jumping in may not be an option.
Nore do we no how long they have had the dog. Do silvers sell quick?
And a butt load of folks wait a very long time to do the things some start right away. Ever marshaled a junior? How many handlers show up every weekend never having tossed a bird for Rover?
Should we help, or judge?

Other than encouraging a new person to keep tossing sticks because you don't like the color of the dog. Nothing, nothing at all.

How would you have responded if the op had typed "I was tossing sticks for my black lab pup sired by FC/AFC Some Black Stud..."
Seriously, not rhetorical. Would you still have posted the diving Chihuahua photo?

I am most certain whatever program the OP is using, it incorporates stick fetch.

there have been a number of times when people 'slyly' post about 'hot button topics', intentionally attempting to troll folks here. Anyone who has a real affinity for the purebred labrador retriever should discourage people from being duped by unscrupulous breeders.

I would assume that the OP has made some headway with his/her (them/their to be PC) dog being able to swim, and also found more suitable items for the dog to retrieve.

In the case the OP doesn't know, I will post this link with information as to why the Labrador Retriever Club does not accept dilute coloration as part of the Labrador Breed Standard.

hopefully someday, the AKC will uphold it's standard and require genetic testing to prove that registered dogs do not carry the dilute gene (or start their own breed/stud book of silver retrievers).

Nobody asked for your opinion about silver labs, and I'm not trying to troll anyone. I just want my dog to be safe in the water. Nobody wants to hear your aggressive opinion about a dog you've never met, so either ignore me or give me some helpful tips you wish you would have had when you started training your very first dog.
